The Research Conference Grant program purpose is to convene scholars from other institutions around the country and the world with IU faculty and students to explore novel ideas and initiatives, expand scholarly networks, and build new research and creative activity partnerships. Preference will be given to proposed conferences that are interdisciplinary and/or advance innovative ideas and themes within areas of research or creative activity consistent with the goals and objectives of the IU 2030 Strategic Plan.
IU Research will provide up to $10,000. Proposals must include confirmation of secured funds, or written confirmation of firmly committed funds, equivalent to a minimum of 50% of the requested amount.
Eligibility
- All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty
- Clinical faculty
- Research scientists and research center directors
- Lecturers, visiting faculty, postdocs, residents, and emeritus faculty are not eligible
Funding and proposal requirements
- Project funding may not exceed $15,000 ($10,000 grant plus 50% match).
- Conferences should take place within 12 months of the award letter.
- Application forms must be submitted at least three months before the conference. Reference our quarterly review schedule.
- Conference location must be in the state of Indiana and preferably on or near an IU campus.
- Faculty and staff are not eligible for additional compensation for effort dedicated to conference planning and execution.
- Conferences focused on the development of teaching or academic programs are not eligible.
- Without stated exceptional circumstances, support for conferences convening existing university organizations or academic societies or associations are not eligible.
- Priority will be given to applicants with little to no remaining start-up funds.
- Letters of support from the Department Chair or Associate Dean for Research and potential sponsors verifying match support are required.
- Acknowledgement of IU Research Conference Grant support in all conference materials.
- Awardees are not eligible to apply for another Research Conference Grant for the same conference within 3 years of the previous award letter date.
Post award requirements
- A final report is due 30 days after the conference. System-generated emails with the online reporting instructions will be sent to you prior to due date.
- Unused funds will be returned to IU Research.
- Requests for no cost extensions are not allowed.
Submission and review of applications
- Submissions are accepted continually until June 5, 2026 based on the availability of funding.

- Use the application form provided or your application will be returned!
- Review deadlines are scheduled quarterly: September 5, December 5, March 6, and June 5. Example: applications received September 6 through December 5 will be reviewed in December.
- Submit the application and attachments as one PDF document through the InfoReady portal.
- Allow at least 4 weeks to receive the funding decision notification.
